Traditional stone houses have 50cm thick massive stonewalls. The thickness of the walls guarantees an earthquake proof house, keeping it cool during the summer months and warm during the winter. Massive stone is an isolating material keeping the temperatures inside the house stable. The maintenance on a stone house is minimal, stone buildings allow more space for the same building permission as the square meterage is measured from inside of the building and not the outside.
Combining traditional Cretan features and modern comfort, for those who do not wish to have all the walls in stone (too much stone), some of the interior walls can be rendered, leaving however the stone features around the doors and the windows. Another option is half stone half brick building, blending traditional stonework features using local materials with the more modern looking rendering.
