The Greek name for Makrigialos translates literally as Long Shore. The anglicised spelling, however, often varies. New road signs erected on the village boundaries in 2009 signalled the adoption of Makry-Gialos as the official spelling, though the hyphenless Makry Gialos is often used, as is the single word variant Makrygialos. Prior to this, Makrigialos was used, and this spelling remains popular. Another common variation is Makriyialos. These single word spellings also have double word variants: Makri Gialos and Makri Yialos. A less commonly used variant is Makriyalos. Towns and villages with similar names can be found in Pieria (Macedonia, northern Greece), and the islands of Zante and Kefalonia.
